Jonesboro, the county seat for Clayton County, incorporated as a town December 13, 1859. Residents originally called the city Leaksville. When the railroad passed through the area, however, residents renamed the city to honor Captain Samuel G. Jones, one of the line’s surveyors.

The Battle of Jonesboro marked the end of the Atlanta Campaign during the Civil War. When federal troops seized control of the railroad in Jonesboro, all supplies to Atlanta were cut off.

Are you a fan of literary classic? Jonesboro was mentioned in the early parts of the popular novel “Gone with the Wind” that marks its place into history. The said literary piece was also made into an award winning film that brought the characters of Rhett and Scarlett into life played by Clark Gable and Vivien Leigh respectively. Spivey Splash Water Park has always been a staple summer destination for those who are visiting Jonesboro and of course its residents. Some parts of the film locations for “Hunger Games: Catching Fire were also shot here.
